Mark Twain Commemorative Coins Mark Twain is remembered to be one of the most celebrated writers in America. He is not only famous for his books but also for addressing complex social issues such as “Civil War” and “Economic Inequalities”. In order to commemorate the life and legacy of such a greatly admired personality, US Mints are given authority to strike $5 Gold coin and $1 Silver Coin with the value of $35 and $10, respectively.Each coin has distinctive obverse and reverse side, designed by eight different artists. The Gold Coin depicts the Portrait of Mark Twain with the inscriptions: “LIBERTY,” “2016” and “IN GOD WE TRUST, On Obverse side. Whereas, the reverse side of the same coin portrays a steamboat along with the inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “$5” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
On the obverse side of the Silver Coin a Portrait of Mark Twain smoking pipe is featured. The Smoke form shadows of Huck Finn and Jim on a raft in the background. The inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2016.” The Reverse side of the Silver coin depicts a variety of characters from Mark Twain’s work: the knight and horse from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, the frog from The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Jim and Huck from Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “$1” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
